A 'U' shaped turned wooden item with a mushroom shaped head at one end and a metal chuck at the other.

Historical information

A wooden auger with a turned wooden handle, heavy wooden frame with chamfered edges on sweep. It has a cast iron chuck with latch button for a locking bit at one end and a mushroom shaped head at the other end; which revolves and has a brass collar with brass washes. A drill bit would be place in the chuck, and then a person would hold the mushroom knob, grip and turn the 'U shape to drill a hole.
