colonial settle made from jarrah and kapur.

Historical information

John Louis Leverman worked as a carpenter and undertaker at Greenough. He was born in Nova Scotia in 1838. He arrived in WA in 1859 and came straight to Greenough. Louis married Elizabeth Rowland at Greenough c1864 and the couple had seven children. Leverman purchased VLs 166, 167 & 170 (total of 131 acres) and built a cottage and workshop just south of the Central Greenough Settlement.

Elizabeth Leverman died in July 1925 and is buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery at Greenough. Louis Leverman died on 2 September 1927 and is also buried there, but in an unmarked grave.

This settle was made at Greenough in the 1870s by Louis Leverman for his wife’s brother, Richard Rowland who was farming on the Irwin. Timber was scarce at Greenough and the kapur, jarrah and pine used by Leverman had to be shipped in to Geraldton. Richard died at Dongara in 1883, and the furniture passed on to his nephew Silas. The furniture was used at Silas and Gertrude Rowland's house at East End, Dongara. Following Gertrude’s death in 1991, her grandson, John Rowland inherited the property and when he sold East End and moved to Subiaco in 2004, he took the settle with him. It was restored by Timothy Harris in 2010.
