Historical information

John Louis Leverman was born in Nova Scotia in 1838. He arrived in WA in 1859 and came straight to Greenough. Louis married Elizabeth Rowland at Greenough c1864 and the couple had seven children. Leverman purchased VLs 166, 167 & 170 (total of 131 acres) and built a cottage and workshop just south of the Central Greenough Settlement. He worked as a carpenter and undertaker.
Louis Leverman died on 2 September 1927 and is buried at the Central Greenough Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
This washstand was made at Greenough by Louis Leverman for his wife’s brother, Richard Rowland who was farming on the Irwin. Timber was scarce at Greenough and had to be shipped in to Geraldton. Richard died at Dongara in 1883, and the furniture passed on to his nephew Silas. The furniture was used at Silas and Gertrude Rowland's house at East End, Dongara. Following Gertrude’s death in 1991, her grandson, John Rowland inherited the property and when he sold East End and moved to Subiaco in 2004, he took the furniture with him.

Contextual Information

Examples of furniture made at Greenough are very rare. As well as this washstand, there are another three pieces of furniture made by Leverman in this collection along with the tools he used to make them.
What makes this washstand especially significant is the association of the tools to the furniture, to the man and to Greenough.
