DR BETTY ROSSLYN AMBROSE
(b. 23 May 1913 Subiaco, Western Australia - d. 16 September 2007 Nedlands, Western Australia)
Betty Ambrose graduated in 1936 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Adelaide, the third-oldest university in Australia. The university was the second university in the English-speaking world (after the University of London, 1878) to admit women on equal terms with men (1881) and allow them equally eligible for all academic prizes and honours.
This book records Betty's attendance at all lectures relevant to the course between May 1930 to June 1937. Her certificate of admission to the Degrees of M.B. and B.S. was signed by the Registrar, Frederick William Eardley (1874-1958), a long-term employee of the University of Adelaide.
The certification of Betty's sixth year final examination was also signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Sir Constantine Trent Champion De Crespigny (1882-1952).
Sir Trent was a highly respected medical practitioner who specialised in pathology. He was commissioned in the Australian Army Medical Corps in 1907 and in May 1915 he joined the Australian Imperial Force, serving as a lieutenant-corporal at the 3rd Australian General Hospital during the Gallipoli campaign. In 1916 he commanded the 1st A.G.H. in Rouen, France, and earned a Distinguished Service Medal for his efforts. Between 1929 and 1948 Sir Trent was the Dean and Chief Examiner in Medicine at the medical school of the University of Adelaide. He was also responsible for the creation of the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science and presided over several medical associations in Britain and Australia.
Betty's father Theodore (1880-1947) and brother John (1914-1979) were also qualified doctors. In 1952 Betty married Robert McCubbin in Perth, Western Australia. She continued practising as a medical practitioner after her husband's death in 1979.
