Appointment authorised by Governor Broome and signed by the Acting Colonial Secretary naming Septimus Burt as Assistant Attorney General after the 'interdiction' (suspension of powers) of his predecessor Alfred Peach Hensman. Dated 30 March 1886.
This document was sent with a cover letter and Commission to appoint Burt to the Executive Council of Western Australia. These three documents are all dated 30 March 1886. The Appointment and the Commission are both signed by Governor Broome with the Public Seal of the Colony of Western Australia affixed. At the centre top of the front page of the Commission is the letter “A” in red ink. At the centre top of the front page of the Appointment is the letter "B” in red ink.
The rest of the Appointment is handwritten in black ink on one sheet of cream paper folded in half. The text of the Appointment is written on the front page and on the inside page to the left of the fold. The seal is positioned near the top left of the front page. A stain from the seal is on the lower left, apparently occurring when the document was at some time in the past folded in half again for storage. Governor Frederick Napier Broome’s signature is at top left.
Septimus Burt's successor, Charles Warton (former member of the House of Commons, Westminster, UK) was appointed in October and arrived in Perth on 30 November 1886.

This document is an Appointment appointing Septimus Burt as Acting Attorney General of Western Australia. The appointment was a consequence of a feud between Governor Broome and Attorney General Hensman and is associated with a turbulent era in West Australian politics. The Appointment is in original condition and is complete with the Public Seal of Western Australia affixed. It is representative of official documentation of the era used to administer a colony of the British Empire.
