Overview

Hand-written letter on blue paper

Historical information

At the time of writing Lewis John Bayley was Resident Magistrate at Geraldton. Whilst Phelps, Shenton and Gale were merchants.
James Rudd (1818-64) was a former convict sent to Western Australia in 1851 (no.275). He had a Tillage Lease at an area now known as Rudds Gully, just south of Geraldton. Rudd had a record of being in conflict with the Aboriginal people. Rudd then took up a pastoral lease at Butterabby, Upper Irwin and was murdered in October 1864 by aborigines ‘Mumbleby and Bill’.

Dear Sir,
The enclosed leter was directed to me which I suppose must have been a mistake I do not know who it ought to be sent to I intended to have returned it sooner but mislaid it
I believe either Phelps Shenton or Gale are administrators to the Estate
Yours truly
Lewis J Bayley
