Receipt from John Patience
1865had written note on blue paper.
John Patience (1819-1870) was convicted in Dorset of house-breaking and stealing and sentenced to 14 years. He was transported to WA aboard the Scindian, arriving in 1850. John was registered as convict no.2. He eventually settled at Greenough where he married Ann Criddle, and farmed at what is now known as "Rock of Ages" Farm.
The North Greenough State School was built by J.S. Maley on Reserve no. 275 the south-east corner of the intersection of Georgina and Gregory Roads (now Brand Highway) to accommodate children of the pensioners and settlers around the Bootenal and North Company Road areas. The school closed during the early 1920s due to declining numbers of pupils. It is believed that the school was demolished in 1922 with much of the stone being used for road construction.
The children of both the Patience and Maley families attended this school.

The North Greenough School was one of three single-room government schools built on the Front Greenough Flats. This document is important evidence of a building that no longer exists.
It is also a remainder of the role Ticket-of-Leave men took in the development of community facilities in rural areas.
