A shoehorn is a smooth, curved tool, and inserted into the heel of a shoe to help the foot slide in easily without crushing the leather.

Beyond saving time, using a shoehorn prevents the back of the shoe (the heel counter) from collapsing or creasing. Consistently crushing this part of the shoe while putting it on degrades the structural support and shortens the lifespan of footwear.
