COMMEMORATIVE SOUVENIR HANDKERCHIEF/SCARF
1945The front page of the 'Selma (Alabama) Times-Journal". Heading: "Unconditional surrender by Japs completed at 20 minute ceremony. Sunday is proclaimed as V-J day in global broadcast by Truman." To the left is a portrait of General MacArthur. The American flag is superimposed on the map of Japan. In the lower right hand corner are the words: "The end of the long road back". All the printing is in turquoise blue on an ivory background. During the war similar scarves were printed with propaganda material. This handkerchief was intended as a souvenir for soldiers returning home. It was owned by an Australian soldier posted in Malaya and given to the donor.
