PHOTOGRAPH: SUBIACO MUNICIPAL CHAMBERS - SUBIACO LITERARY INSTITUTE
c. 1900The black and white photograph shows the front of the Subiaco Municipal Chambers, erected in 1899. The street (and pavement?) are unpaved and rough looking. The building is of brick with a large two sided front door in the centre and two windows on each side. Above the door and the windows are arches. A portico is also above the front door. On top of the building is an elaborate border with two finials above the front entrance. On the windows to the left of the front door are the office hours as well as the sign: 'Subiaco Municipal Chambers. Local Board of Health'. The signs on the windows to the right of the door read: 'Subiaco Literary Institute' and 'Public Reading Room'. There is a kerosene street lamp to the left of the front door. (The glass chimney is visible within the lamp.) (See Ken Spillman Identity Project on Electricity.) A note with the photograph reads (although it does not seem relevant) : 'This photo is taken earlier than on the left - note the lack of power lines and the small tree in front of the second picture. This building was demolished in 1971 following the construction of the new administrative block in 1968.'
