AMERICAN ARMY OFFICER IN CAMP IN CLAREMONT SHOWGROUNDS
1942B/W Print. An American army officer, in dark uniform trousers and a lighter coloured bomber jacket, is leaning against a sedan car painted in camouflage. Surrounding him are heavy carts and in the background are the sheds associated with the horse or cattle exhibits of the Royal Show. Written on the back of the original [Standing beside an Aussie Army Car well camoflaged at Camp Claremont 6/12/42] also[Photo taken first month after my arrival in Australia. There we wore woollen clothing & a jacket. I am in front of an Australian military car & in an Australian camp, formerly a fair ground]
Carts shown in the photo were probably associated with the Australian Army Heavy Horse Transport Unit stationed in the Showgrounds during WWII. Carts and horse drawn lorries were used to transport goods, presumably because of petrol shortages. The draught horses were paddocked in the area that has since become Sideshow Alley.
