Embroidered in gold it has the words ' Australia's Defence Americas Cup 1987' with an Australian flag and red and white sailing flag above and the silver Americas Cup trophy below.
The 1987 America's Cup sailing challenge was the twenty-sixth challenge for the America's Cup. Australia II had won in 1983 and was defending the title.
The American challenger Stars and Stripes 87 beat the Australian defender Kookaburra III in a four-race sweep in the best of seven series. The series was held in Fremantle WA between October 1986 and February 1987.
