Figurine - King John Signing the Magna Carta
1830 - 1870Full-length ornamental figure of King John (1167-1216), sitting in a tent, crowned, and with both hands on a document (Magna Carta). At each side a page standing, with a flag above him.
The original colours of the figurine of, red, blue and green, were erased during the cleaning process after fire damage.
King John Signing the Magna Carta (June 1215) was a pivotal, forced agreement at Runnymede (near Windsor) between the English King and rebellious barons to limit royal power, prevent arbitrary imprisonment, and stop illegal taxation. Known as the "Great Charter," it established that the monarch was subject to the law, not above it.
Magna Carta, which means 'Great Charter' in Latin.
