1897
Subcollections
Overview

This sepia photograph features a group portrait of twelve men taken in a bushland setting.
The men are arranged in three rows, with five men seated on a fallen tree trunk. The man in the middle of this row is the Mayor. Behind them stand a another five men, while two more lay stretched out on the ground, with jackets under them.
All men wear suits with waistcoats, shirts and ties, and three hold umbrellas. A single hat sits on the ground in front of the group.
The photograph is mounted in a green cardboard mount with a decorative brown border. The mount is very damaged and torn in places.
On the reverse are various notes, written in pencil and ink by different hands:
There appears to be a framers note: 'Nov 19.97, 4/4 beaded oak 105 and small slip(?)'
In a different handwriting is written some of the names of men in the photograph:
'Subiaco Municipal Council / (first)
Chas Hart, Richard Gee
- - -
Joseph Lake - - North (Town Clerk), Harry Doyle (Mayor), -, Campbell (Engineer) -
- - Hewson. '
Below this, written in pencil, reads 'From Mr Lake' but it is unclear if this means the above information or possibly the photograph. Please note, T. W. Hetherington appears in this image, although his name is not written on the back.

Historical information

The first Subiaco Municipal Council was elected in 1897. It has been suggested that this photograph was taken at the site clearing for the first Municipal Offices.
