Historical information

Kojonup's first school was held at the Barracks in 1863-1894, before moving to Pensioner Road until 1964. St Bernard's Catholic school began in 1952. 23 small schools were established in the district from 1906,- Marleyup, to the last to close Glenorchy in 1996, having opened in 1937. Some ran for a few years, some were simply a room in a home, while others like Jingalup ran from 1919-1970 and had up to 4 teachers.. The names of the schools and districts are still used today - mainly as the volunteer fire districts and also the names on many school buses that now transport the children to and from the two school in Kojonup. A book called 'Give them Wings' edited by Barbara Hobbs .explores aspects of each of Kojonup's schools and Kodja Place also interprets the story in a variety of ways. "One story, many voices".
