Overview

A surveyor's chain, also known as a Gunther chain, was used to survey distance, road and paddock areas. It was 66 feet long (20.116metres) and had 100 links (20.116cm). It took 80 chain to measure 1 mile. A surveyor was required to have his chain checked with authorities from time to time, to ensure it was accurate in length.

1 link = 7.89 inches

1 rod = 25 links

1 chain = 100 links
