The history of Coles in Midland dates back to December 20, 1948 when the first store opened at 72 Helena Street in Midland Junction.
Known as Store Number 102, it was first opened as a flock shop. December 10, 1953 saw this new Coles Variety Store open on the same site offering a wider range of variety products. On October 20, 1960, Coles Variety extension to the rear lane-way was completed allowing the retailer even more floor space for products.
Coles Variety at 72 Helena Street remained operating after a new Coles Supermarket opened at the rear on Stafford Street in 1973. The Helena Street Coles officially closed seven years later on March 4, 1980 a day before Kmart opened at Midland Gate.
Part of the Council Club Hotel building can be seen on the left. The hotel burned down in 1990 and was rebuilt in 1997.
