Handcrafted model of M113 Fire Suppport Vehicle

Historical information

The Australian Army began operating M113 APCs in 1964. Initially, two M113s were purchased for trials in 1962. By 1979, Australia had acquired either 817 or 840 M113s, comprising nine different variants. These vehicles served as armored transport and reconnaissance units, as well as mechanized infantry formations. The M113s were also used as support vehicles by various other units.
The M113 played a crucial role during Australia’s commitment to the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1972. It transported troops and provided essential support in the challenging terrain. Some M113s were deployed during peacekeeping missions:: Somalia (1993); Rwanda (1994-1995); East Timor (1999-2002, 2006-2008)
A long-running modernization program began in the 1990s. Between 2007 and 2012, 431 M113s were upgraded. Despite these upgrades, the M113s are now considered obsolete due to their vulnerability to attack. They have not been included in recent deployments.
