Joy Mumme In Claremont Mental Hospital Nurses Uniform

c. 1934
Overview

This photograph includes historic language about mental illness, quoted from a historic source. While we would not use this language ourselves, we have made the decision to retain this language as they are important in representing the attitudes and trends of a particular time in the past.
Waist-length, hand-tinted, studio portrait of Joy Mumme, aged 18 or 19 years, in long-sleeved, pink uniform with collar and vee neck. Front of bodice is virtually covered by white apron and she is wearing a white cap on her neatly waved short brown hair.

Historical information

Joy lived in Nedlands and worked at the Claremont Mental Hospital while she waited to turn 21 in order to start nursing training. She later lived in the police quarters at 66 Victoria Avenue, Claremont which is now part of the the Claremont Museum.
