1946 Peggy Gibbs Midwinter Burslem Nursery Mug – “He Went to Bed to Mend His Head”
c. 1950This charming Midwinter Burslem porcelain nursery mug was produced in England between 1946 and 1953 and features artwork by children’s illustrator Peggy Gibbs. The front depicts a sick child tucked in bed with the caption “He went to bed to mend his head with vinegar and brown paper”, referencing the traditional English nursery rhyme. The reverse shows a small tipped bucket motif, a signature detail used in the series.
Made from Midwinter’s early post-war porcelain, this piece reflects the brand’s distinctive hand-applied illustrations and warm pastel palette. The mug shows characteristic fine crazing throughout the glaze, common to Midwinter ware of this era. The underside carries the green Midwinter Porcelon Burslem England mark used between 1946–1953.
