Contextual Information

Sir John Charles Hoad (1856-1911) was born on 25 January 1856 at Goulburn, New South Wales and was a professional soldier in the Victorian colonial and later Australian army. In January 1907 he was promoted major general and confirmed as inspector general of armed forces for Australia. The donation of the shield was seen to legitimise the creation of civilian rifle clubs replacing the volunteer and militia formations of the colonial era. At the time there was some disagreement within military ranks over whether civilian rifle clubs should be supported.
