Round gold coloured compact with mother of pearl patterned top, with raised design in centre. Mirror inside lid. Base has circular design in gold

Historical information

The compact was use by Mrs Iris Grafton in the 1940s and 50s. The compact was made in Great Britain.

The makeup compact became popular in the early 1900s as makeup became more common and affordable. Because compacts were designed to be used outside of the home they also became a fashion item with designs on them heavily influenced by current styles and trends.

A representative example of a common item women, since the early 1900s, would carry with them so they could freshen up their makeup. The compact was also a fashion accessory with designs on them that matched that years fashion and style. This compact features geometric designs and uses pearl inlays and dates from the 1940s.
