DRAWN THREAD, SOL, TEA CLOTH

Overview

The cloth is almost square and is made of sections of fabric to create the whole. The centre section, 800mm x 780mm, consists of a diamond shape with drawn thread motifs, 5 across and 5 down in the centre, then 3 then 1 on the outsides. Beyond this, on the plain fine linen fabric, north and south, a large dragon worked in satin stitch, straight stitches and stem stitch, flows from east to west. The satin stitch and the use of voiding creates the look of scales on the body. The eyes of the dragon are padded. In one the eye has come apart, leaving a hole. On the east and west sides, a sun is embroidered in chain, stem and satin stitch. Beyond this is a separate section, a band of drawn thread work. Each corner consists of a separate square, with a drawn thread motif in the centre, scrolls in stem stitch and drawn thread band. More scrolls before the plain edge.

This theme is carried out in the rectangular bands on each side, connecting the corner squares and consisting of 7 circular and 6 oblong drawn thread motifs surrounded by surrounded by stem stitch scrolls, a band of drawn thread and surrounded by more stem stitch scrolls on the linen.

The border to the cloth is a separate section of plain linen fabric and 95mm deep.
