DRESS: EVENING DRESS, GREEN AND GOLD LAME

c. 1950
Overview

Full length evening dress, outer layer of lightweight silver lame on green. Top skirt is divided on left waist and split shows green net underskirt. Beneath this is a white net underskirt and a green taffeta lining. Opera top, with fine straps, swathes to the zipper on left side. All skirts are very full, both gathered and flared and centre back of the outer lame skirt is lengthened to provide a small train. Green net draping at top of bodice.

Dress has label hand sewn to back bodice. White label, black printed lettering - 'SIMPLICITY'. Dress might have been made from a Simplicity pattern, which provided the dressmaker with a label.

Historical information

Dress and stole are from Nancy Russell.

Nancy Russell, was born in Geraldton 1908, died Subiaco 2003. Although Nancy Russell's mother, Mary Russell, taught her daughter's primary education at home, she later attended Perth College (Anglican School for Girls In Perth) for her secondary education, and went on to study at the University of Western Australia. She had a long and distinguished career as a High School teacher in Queensland, South Australia ( Walford House) Colombo, Sri Lanka (6 years). After war service in the Middle East and Mediterranean and service in South East Asia, asisting with the repatriation of prisoners of war Nancy Russell returned to Perth. She was Headmistress of Kobeelya girls school in Katanning for several years then established the Meals on Wheels service in Perth. She returned to teaching at Armadale, Cyril Jackson and Mt. Lawley High Schools and retired in 1963. She was an active member of the Karrakatta Club.she was awarded the MBE in 1946.
