Photograph: Royals v Florettas, 1968
1968Black and white photograph of women's basket ball/netball match in 1968. Royals (dark uniforms) v Florettas (light uniforms). Photograph features (L-R) Carol Cutbush, Val Goff, Jan Ryan. Annette Simper is on the far right wearing the number 4 bib, catching the ball.
Playing numbers were introduced in the early 1960s to denote playing position. Each player wore a number 1-7 which denoted their playing position on the court and helped umpires to better identify team players and when each player was going offside. Numbers were worn on both the front and back of the uniforms.
