About organisation
Netball WA is the governing body for netball in Western Australia, incorporating community netball, our Suncorp Super Netball Team, West Coast Fever, and the indigenous education initiative, Shooting Stars.
Netball (originally known in Australia as Women's Basket Ball) was first organised as a regular sport in WA in July 1924 by a resolution of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Perth. The inaugural season of the competition saw a single grade competition consisting of 10-12 regular teams and 5 umpires. The past one hundred years of netball in Western Australia have reflected the history and growth of the state, responded to changing economic conditions, new laws and disruptive world events, adapted to social change and population growth, and embraced diversity. Players, officials, volunteers, administrators and supporters of the game have all contributed in countless ways over the decades, always with enduring enthusiasm, passion and dedication for the sport they love. Netball remains the largest female participation sport in Australia.
The Netball WA History & Heritage Department is in the process of cataloguing, digitising and photographing its collection and will be continually uploading to this platform. Due to the nature of the materials, some records may be incomplete or contain inaccuracies.
