Photograph: Matthews Basket Ball Centre, Action, Numbered Bibs
Black and white photograph of a women's basket ball (netball) game in the late 1960s. Photograph was taken on one of the bitumen courts at the Matthews Basket Ball Centre. Two players are featured in the photograph fighting for possession of the ball. The players wear numbered bibs.
Playing numbers were introduced in the early 1960s to denote playing position. Each player wore a number 1-7 which denoted their playing position on the court and helped umpires to better identify team players and when each player was going offside. Numbers were worn on both the front and back of the uniforms. Playing position letters were introduced a few years later by the All Australian Women's Basket Ball Association (AAWBBA).
