Contextual Information

These mangarr (sandals) represent the passing on of knowledge by a senior woman. The traditional people used to peel the bark off the trees and strip the inner fibre to make mangarr (shoes) for walking on the hot sand. The bark is best stripped when wet and split into fine long strips. The fibre is like twine and woven into a pad to fit the length of the foot with the extra twine woven through the toes and tied at the ankles.
