Sketch of the Golden Sheaf Hotel during the 1888 flood
1888paper, coloured inks, pencil
The Golden Sheaf Hotel was located on the north-east corner of the intersection of Gregory Road (now Brand Highway) and Georgina Road at Greenough.
In 1881 John Stephen Maley commenced building the hotel which opened in 1885.Initially he was to name it the Railway Hotel, in anticipation of the Geraldton-Walkaway railway being built near by. When this didn't occur, the name was changed to The Golden Sheaf Hotel. Locals referred to it as the "Dead Horse."
Although the hotel was built above previous flood levels, 1888 experienced the highest flood levels in recorded history. It is reputed the water was flowing over the hotel's bar counters.
The hotel was demolished in 1922.
