PHOTOGRAPH: WHITTAKERS SOCIAL PICNIC
1898The original sepia photograph shows a large group of people with virtually all the women and children seated on the ground. Some women hold croquet mallets and balls. Some of the men are seated with the others standing behind. The photograph was taken at Dyson's Swamp, the area first known as the Shenton Park Lake and now Lake Jualbup.
Typed note says: Whittakers' staff and their families on a picnic at 'Dyson's Swamp' - the Shenton Park Lake, in 1898. The land around the swamp was used for a wide variety o0f recreational activities, and for a time, it was the home of the Subiaco Football Club (according to Subi Hist Soc.)
