King George VI Coronation Biscuit Tin
c. 1937A small tarnished hexagonal biscuit tin that has a colour painting of King George the VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Margaret at the time of the coronation of King George VI on its lid. The surrounds of the image may have once been golden but have tarnished badly. There is a raised hexagonal ridge around the image and then a blue hexagonal band towards the outer edge. The sides of the tin show decorative patterns in blue, red gold and black.
King George VI was born as Albert Frederick Arthur George on 14 December 1895. He was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death on 6 February 1952. He was also the last Emperor of India from 1936 until the British Raj was dissolved in August 1947 and the first head of the Commonwealth following the London Declaration of 1949.
Albert was the second son of George V and only ascended to the throne as George VI in 1936 after his brother Edward VIII abdicated the throne in order to marry the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. The coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was performed at Westminster Abbey on 12th May 1937, the date that had been scheduled for the coronation of Edward VIII.
George VI and Queen Elizabeth had 2 daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. Elizabeth ascended to the throne as Elizabeth II on the death of her father in 1952.

Biscuit tins are steel cans made of tin plate. This consists of steel sheets thinly coated with tin. The sheets are then bent to shape.
Biscuit tins were often repurposed as storage cannisters after the original biscuits were long gone. This biscuit tin was filled with dominos when it was donated to the Museum and the dominos have been retained.
