Overview

A civic reception with mounted infantry in the main street of Newcastle (now Toodyay) in 1908
Buildings in evidence are the Post Office and Council Chambers.
The Infantry are to the left on their horses with one horse and officer mounted.
Between the Post Office and Council Chambers are a group of dignitaries.
One dog on foot path nearby which is in another group of men.
o lower right is a photographer with tripod.
To centre is motor car with hood down.
Pennants are mounted across the street above.

Historical information

Museum records describe this photograph as the visit of Sir John Forrest to Newcastle in Western Australia to open the water supply .
However a second copy of this same photograph has been identified in Shire of Toodyay museum records (accession no. 2007.23) as the visit of Governor Bedford to start the extension of the railway to Bolgart.
