JH Davies And Family
c. 1910Family group in front of a brick house with ornate post, iron lace valance and lattice work below the verandah railing. An elderly woman is seated in the centre of the group with a young girl, hair in ringlets, kneeling on the grass at her feet. To the left of the woman is a middle-aged man in a dark suit sitting with legs crossed, hat on knee. Beside him is a younger woman wearing a cartwheel hat. To the right is a middle-aged woman with one hand clutching a handbag and the other resting on that of a young boy sitting in a cane chair beside her. Standing behind these are three young women - one in an enormous hat - two young men in dark three piece suits and a young lad in lighter jacket. All the women are in long, high-necked, long-sleeved outfits.
J.H. Davies named his house in Victoria 'Claremont' in memory of his stay in Claremont from 1895-1900, while building Claremont Jetty. It was retained as a storeroom, kitchen, dining room for workmen when a large 13 room homestead was built.
