PHOTOGRAPH: BOYS IN BOAT, JOLIMONT SWAMP
c. 1940Black and white copy of a photograph of six boys in a home-made boat on Jolimont Swamp c.1940. A sail of rough cloth is flying, supported by bush timber mast and boom. The boat is likely made from repurposed corrugated iron. Houses and a few trees are visible on the lake's edge, in the background. The lake is very calm. The boys range in age from approximately four to fourteen. The oldest boy wears a ship's officer's cap.
The Jolimont Swamp, earlier called Perry's Watering Hole became a lake in the first half of the century following the drainage of water form the eastern side of Subiaco - the Churchill Avenue area - into this low-lying swamp. Another factor may have been the clearing of trees around the area as housing developed contributing to the run-off of water.
