Water wheel at Payne's Mill
Black and white photograph of the water wheel which powered Payne's Mill at Lexton Park.
George Payne purchased the location on Capel River in 1854. A carpenter by trade, he quickly set about construction of a water-driven mill. Payne's stepson Fred Hawkins and convict labourers were likely employed on the construction also. A ten foot diameter water wheel powered the grindstone which was used to turn locally produced wheat into flour. The mill was just one of Payne's many construction projects, which included a bridge across the river, several buildings, carts and even ships.
