WW2 Leather RAF Flying Helmet
c. 1944A small sized Type C unwired WW2 leather flying helmet with what used to be an elasticated chin strap which is secured with a 'BENNETT'S' friction fastener. At each ear are black rubber cups to house the external radio receivers (the receivers are not present). The the headphone leads were channeled to the rear of the helmet through some leather straps. Below the rubber cups are three metal press studs for the attachment of an oxygen mask. The helmet is lined with chamois and has padded ear cups to reduce external noise. Goggles could be secured to the helmet by a set of two leather tabs with press studs positioned on either side of the rubber ear caps, and a single buckle strap at the rear.
The Type C RAF helmet first appeared in 1941 and became the standard RAF flying helmet for most of the Second World War. In 1944 the design was altered slightly with the addition of an elasticated chin strap and channeling the headphone leads to the rear of the helmet.
