MACHINE, SEWING ATTACHMENT ZIG-ZAG STITCH

c. 1960
Overview

Consists of a bracket to mount the device on the presser bar and the mechanism to produce the zig-zag stitch in a cylindrical housing behind it. The presser foot is long and articulated and has a lever mounted transversely at the rear to control the width of the stitch. Through the centre of the cylindrical section are two plastic locking 'screws', the left determines the stitch length while the right enables the changing of the cams for automatic stitching. The actuating arm projects forward from above the right locking screw to connect with the needle screw.

Historical information

This zig-zag pattern attachment was manufactured in Switzerland by the Singer Sewing Machine Company in the 1950s. It was designed to attach to older sewing machines, that could only do straight stitch, allowing them to now do a slanting or zig-zag stitch.
The attachment was owned by Mrs Bower who used the attachment on her Davies Sewing Machine (AK1975.111). The Davies Sewing Machine was manufactured in Dayton Ohio in the United States of American between 1868 and 1924.
