WWII Y.M.C.A. Scottish Branch Voluntary War Service badge
c. 1940World War Two era metal and enamel badge issued to members of the Scottish branch of the Y.M.C.A. to acknowledge Voluntary War Service.
The design features four joined quadrants, each having a semicircular shape. The metal edged border is in blue enamel and features the words 'Voluntary War Service' on the upper three sides and three dots on the bottom side, all embedded in the enamel. There are four metal fleur-de-lis motifs between the quadrants on the outside of the badge.
The central area of the badge features the Y.M.C.A. logo (a red inverted triangle) on a white background. There is a black rectangular box over the top of the triangle which contains the letters 'Y.M.C.A'. There is a depiction of a thistle and two leaves embedded in the white enamel in the top quadrant.
The reverse has a brooch fitting. There is no maker's mark.
Badges such as these were worn by civilians in order to indicate that the person wearing it was engaged in important war work. This extended to volunteers in charitable organisations such as the Red Cross and Y.M.C.A.
