Historical information

Collection of 106 of paintings by Richard Ellis that were selected by the Smithsonian Institution to form a traveling exhibit of the marine mammals of the world. The collection was purchased by Perth businessman Kevin Parry in 1985 and donated to Whale World, now known as Albany's Historic Whaling Station.

Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinera)
Found only along the coasts of southern Australia, this is one of the few sea lions that is non-migratory. It spends most of its life around the beaches where it was born. These animals were severely decimated by sealers in the 18th and 19th centuries, and there are thought to be no more than 5000 left today. The Australian sea lion is know for its ability to move on land, and there is a record of an individual found six miles from the sea.
