Communications Gallery - Centenary of Royal Australian Corps of Signals

Overview

The Begbie Signal Lamp came into use in the 1880’s. It has a powerful lens to focus the beam and a shutter operated by a knob on top of the lamp. The box, height approximately38cm, is made of steel and painted black, contains a lamp which projects a beam through a convex lens. The beam can be interrupted for signaling by a system of shutters. Inside the box is a wooden spatular which allows the hot lamp to be handled. Each Infantry battalion was issued with eight of these 'Begbie' lamps and six were issued to Cavalry Regiments.

Historical information

Lamps, heliographs and flags were all used by Australian contingents during the 2nd Anglo-Boer War 1899 to 1902.
