Framed photograph with names of 2/33 Battalion Sergeants' Mess taken in England, 3 December 1940
The 2/33rd Battalion was formed in the United Kingdom in June 1940 as the "72nd Battalion" to create the 25th Brigade, which became part of the 7th Division. The battalion was transferred to the Middle East in early 1941, and fought against the Vichy French in the invasion of Syria and Lebanon.
In early 1942, the battalion was transferred back to Australia and was sent to New Guinea where it took part in the Kokoda campaign, fighting around the beachheads at Buna–Gona. In 1943, after returning to Australia for six months to refit, the battalion was committed to the Salamaua–Lae campaign, and then the Ramu Valley–Finisterre Range campaign. Returning to Australia in early 1944, a long period of inactivity followed before the 2/33rd undertook its last campaign in Borneo The battalion was disbanded in Brisbane in March 1946.
