PADLOCK - WESTERN AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS

Overview

Oval shaped metal padlock. The padlock case is heart shaped . Top right is the hinge pin for the C shaped shackle that is locked in place on the top left of the padlock case.
On the front in the middle is a rectangle vertical dust cover over the key way. Text stamped on the dust cover which swivels on a top hinge to the left. Front of case held in place by 3 rivets around edge.

Historical information

The padlock was found in the Armadale Railway Station signal box when it was moved from the Armadale Train Station to its current location as the Armadale Information Centre on Jull Street in 1990.

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection of that is associated with the history of rail within the City of Armadale. The arrival of the railway to the City of Armadale in 1889 saw the district change from one that was isolated from Perth due to distance (approx 30km from Perth) and a poorly maintained road. to one that had quick access via the train line. The train line meant not only the rapid transport of people but also of mail, news, ice and goods into and out of the district.
