World War 2, Western Australia, Rottnest Island, Coast Artillery Instrumentation, Coordinate Convertor

Overview

Coordinate Converter No 2A Mk 3 – With its three operators, the Coordinate Convertor transformed rectangular map coordinates into target range and bearings for the pivot H1 gun at the Oliver Hill Battery. Range and bearing were continuously transmitted electrically to the input side of the Fire Direction Table.
Input data in the form of rectangular coordinates could be received from either the Fortress Plotters or the battery Depression Position Finders. Other possible sources of data were the Fortress Observation Posts or aircraft observation.

Later a more accurate instrument, the Ratemeter, was fitted to the Coordinate Converter. This compact electrical instrument sampled the rate of change of a target and provided a more accurate course and speed than was possible from successive plots from Depression Position Finders or Fortress Plotters.
