BREAKSEA LIGHTHOUSE, 1902
1902A black and white photographic image of the opening of the new Breaksea Island lighthouse on the 15th of February 1902. In the picture, three men and a woman are standing in the gallery of the original lighthouse, while a group of twenty-six people are gathered at ground level in front of the old lighthouse building. The new lighthouse tower is visible in the background. In the foreground, the old Breaksea Island signal station masts and rigging are prominent, along with numerous signal flags topped by a Union Jack.
The new lighthouse was officially opened by the Governor Sir Arthur Lawley by telegraph signal to the operators of the new light from the mainland.
