BREAKSEA ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE, 1902
c. 1902The photograph is a black and white image of the Breaksea Lighthouse from 1902.The photo shows a large group of people posing for the camera on the lighthouse gallery deck, with four men standing at the base to the right of the entry to the tower. In the background, on the left, two men are standing on the gallery of the original light, and behind them, three more people can be seen through the lantern enclosure, with the lens and lantern gear visible behind them.
The new lighthouse was officially opened by Governor Sir Arthur Lawley through a telegraph signal to the operators of the new light from the mainland. The governor chose not to travel to Breaksea Island for the opening due to fears of seasickness, and official proceedings took place in the Albany town hall.
