Black and White portrait photograph of Lance Corporal Thomas Joseph COLLINS 682. The photograph shows his head and shoulders in posed position dressed in his army uniform without a hat. Two Australian Army General Service Badges (rising sun) are visible on his collar together with the Anzac “A” and AUSTRALIA title on his left arm and shoulder. A cloth patch also sits on his right arm reflecting his unit of 10th Light Horse. At the bottom left corner of the photo is an inscription handwritten at an angle of 45%. The reverse of the card has proforma printing for a postcard and a handwritten name and address of the recipient. The card shows some staining at the top front and back and black marks on the front edges.

Historical information

This photograph is believed to be of Lance Corporal Thomas Joseph COLLINS 682. Thomas was born in New South Wales and enlisted on 19 November 1914 at the age of 21. He joined the 9th Light Horse Regiment and embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A47 Mashobra on 29 January 1915. He served at Gallipoli and then Egypt and transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Machine Gun Squadron in July 1916. He and returned to Australia in August 1919 on board HMAT Oxfordshire.
The accreditation of the picture to Lance Corporal Thomas Joseph COLLINS 682 reflects the unit and places he served and a comparison of the signature on the image and that in his service records held in the National Archives of Australia.
