Overview

WW2 Australian Army sewing kit made from khaki cotton, possibly chino, also known as a "soldiers housewife". Half of the inside of the sewing kit is lined with cream cotton which is stamped in purple MADE IN AUSTRALIA 1943. The kit held wool, cotton, needles, buttons and all the items required for emergency uniform repair in a small three sided pocket at the end of the sewing kit. Sewn to the top of this pocket is a square piece of blue wool in which the needles are kept. The sewing kit is rectangular when spread out, although one end comes to a triangular point where there is a thin piece of khaki cotton which serves to secure the kit when it is rolled closed.

Historical information

This "housewife" sewing kit was probably made by H.E.Barry and Son in Brunswick, Melbourne who were contracted by the Australian Army to make these kits up to 1942. At some times needles were so scarce in Australia that Barry had to import them for New Zealand to fulfil his obligations. The factory employed about 15 women to assist with the war effort.

Contextual Information

Soldiers had to make their own running repairs to damaged clothing and equipment and these "housewives" were invaluable as they were light and did not take up too much space in their packs.
