c. 1917Framed citation to Sapper Eugene Cousson for services rendered in the Battles of Verdun, Champagne and Somme,
Timber frame with decorative leaves and berries (possibly laurel), scroll and monogram, CE, for Eugene Cousson. There is a metal plaque at the bottom of the frame.
The citation is cream in colour with silver-grey writing. In the top left is the French Medal of Honour (Légion d'Honneur) and in the top right, The French War Cross (1914-1918) (Croix de Guerre) with two stars .
Eugene Cousson was a Sapper in the French 97th Territorial Infantry Regiment, 6th Army Corps in WWI. He was awarded at least two medals for his service.
The Croix de Guerre is a military award given for feats of bravery, either by individuals or groups. Eugene has two stars on the ribbon indicating that he has been awarded this medal for three separate acts of bravery.
The Légion d'Honneur is the highest French order of merit.
The fact that both of these medals are framed with the citation may indicate that they were group awards.
