SIGN, ADVERTISING - CHAMPION LAKES

Overview

Rectangle white canvas sign, mounted onto a wooden frame. On the top half of the sign is a colour arial photograph of the Champion Lakes Rowing course, taken from south west of the lake. To the left of the lake is Tonkin Highway. To the bottom right and extending up the right side of the lake is the Champion Lake housing development.
Tonkin Highway and to the north of the lake Albany Highway have been highlighted with white lines. The champion Lakes development is outlined with a blue line and has a transparent blue colouring over the top of it. The 5k pathway around the lake is highlighted with light blue dashes.
On the image are ten rectangle text labels on blue with white text. Each label had a small triangular arrow coming out of it pointing to the feature it is identifying. Text along the bottom of the sign [Walk, cycle, run, kayak or simply relax and look at the view. Champion Lakes is a great place to live.
In the bottom right corner is a blue rectangle pennon shaped pennant with white text [CHAMPION LAKES]. The canvas is staples to the wooden frame

Historical information

In 2004 work started on Champion Lake, a new lake designed primarily for competitive rowing. On the eastern shore land was made available through the government agency Landcorp (in 2025 Development WA) for housing. Work started on the first major stage at the south eastern end of the lake in 2007 with the first homes being built the following year. The development continued north along the lakes shore line with the next stage starting in 2014 and the last major stage starting in 2022.
This board was displayed in the Landcorp Sales office located at 30 Dorney Esplanade. It was used to promote the development and was created when they started to advertise the second major stage of the development in 2015. The board was removed in 2024 when the building was handed over to the local community.

Statement of significance

The Champion Lakes signage boards are significant for their association with the planning, promotion and staged development of the Champion Lakes residential precinct in the early twenty-first century. Installed at the Landcorp sales office, the board formed part of the public-facing interpretation of a major government-led urban development linked to the creation of Champion Lake, which commenced in 2004 as a purpose-built facility for competitive rowing.
