Ottoman prisoner of war beadwork snake, 1919
1919Ottoman prisoner of war beadwork snake made in 1919. It has been handmade with small glass beads using the beaded crochet method.
The upper side of the snake features a zig zag pattern of dark royal blue beads on a golden brown background. Individual sky blue beads are positioned between the zig zags and also line the snake's open mouth.
The snake's eyes are represented by a larger red bead surrounded by a circle of white beads.
The underside of the snake is made from white beads. The date, 1919, enclosed within angle brackets, is made from the dark royal blue beads and located centrally. A few of the same blue beads are attached under the lower jaw.
The snake has definite signs of wear and age. The beads on the top of the head are mostly missing, revealing the brown crocheted fabric below. The tail is also a bit battered.
An excellent article about Ottoman beadwork by AWM researcher, Dianne Rutherford, is attached.
There are several examples in the collection including a much smaller snake and a tasselled bag.
